Who is this course for?

The course is suited to anyone who is new to contraception counselling or as an update for those already conducting contraception consultations or wishing to develop existing knowledge.

What will I learn?

This virtual course provides an opportunity to explore the consultation for contraception from start to finish. It encompasses the importance of contraception counselling including the skill of taking a detailed history. The range of contraceptive methods will be reviewed in terms of the benefits, limitations and assessment of risk including considerations for younger people. The course is interactive with opportunity to apply knowledge and evidence to clinical situations and problem solve for special groups or situations such as missed or late contraception. The course is suited to anyone who is new to contraception counselling or as an update for those already conducting contraception consultations or wishing to develop existing knowledge.

Topics Covered:

  • Consider what is contraception with an overview of the range of choices available to women

  • Factors which can influence individual choice when choosing contraception

  • Information gathering from history taking and information sharing in the consultation.

  • Legal and ethical issues of contraception counselling for under 18’s including safeguarding

  • A deeper dive into the individual methods, their benefits, limitations and risks including natural family planning, barrier methods, combined hormonal contraception, progesterone only methods and LARC (Long acting reversible contraception)

  • Assessing risk in contraception counselling for initiating and continuation of methods

  • Initiating contraception, timings

  • Special groups and situations including missed or late contraception, over 40’s, obesity and drug interactions.

Is there any funding available?

Eligible individuals employed in General Practice within Humber and North Yorkshire may access NHSE funding opportunities, available via the Primary Care Workforce and Training Hub.

If you are eligible for a funded place, please select the relevant ‘Funded' option at the checkout,
and you will not be charged. As places on each date are limited, each eligible person may book with funding on only one date per course – if you wish to swap dates, please cancel your initial booking before re-booking another date. To avoid funding waste, multiple bookings for the same individual, non-attendance without cancellation, or short notice cancellation (except in exceptional circumstances) will not be funded. Eligibility will be checked for all funded bookings, if it is determined that you have incorrectly claimed eligibility for funding, an invoice for the full course fee will be issued.

CPD Funding for Nurses, NAs & AHPs

This course can be available utilising NHSE CPD funding for eligible individuals (Nurses, NAs and Allied Health Professionals). To be eligible, the person attending must be:

· A Nurse, Nursing Associate, or Allied Health Professional (e.g. Paramedic/Physiotherapist – full AHP list detailed here)

· Employed by a General Practice/ PCN within Humber and North Yorkshire

· Have not chosen to claim an individual CPD funding allowance for 2025/26 instead of accessing funded training

· Have not already exceeded the fair-share limit of two CPD funded courses with Academicare between Sept. 2025 - Sept. 2026 (unless on the New-to-Practice Nursing Foundation Programme)

You can pay by invoice, credit card, or debit card. If you're choosing to pay by invoice and you're not the person responsible for processing payments, you can simply forward the invoice email to your finance department for payment.
