Who is this course for?

Practice Nurses or Nurse Associates new to primary care or those Nurses who wish to expand their knowledge in Contraception.

What will I learn?

Join our comprehensive course on Contraception. Throughout our course you will gain insights into effective counselling, Gillick competence/Fraser guidelines, and the legal aspects of contraception services. This training covers various contraceptive methods, including long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), their modes of action, health risks, and non-contraceptive benefits. We focus on the initiation of contraception, reviews, guidance on missed pills or late use, and pregnancy risk, all in line with the Faculty of Sexual Reproductive Healthcare guidelines. Additionally, you'll learn about emergency contraception and the appropriate times to initiate it. The session combines theoretical knowledge, practice-based scenarios, and the application of the UK medical eligibility criteria (UKMEC).

Topics Covered:

  • Gillick competence & Fraser guidelines

  • UKMEC

  • Specific methods

  • LARC

  • Fertility awareness methods

  • Initiation

Assessment

After completing the training, you will need to undergo supervised practice in a clinical setting and complete the required competencies before receiving your certificate. You will require a competent registered (nurse) practitioner within your workplace to confirm your practical competency before you can practice independently.
