Learn the anatomy of the heart, ECG theory and practice ECG recording techniques.
Who is this course for?
Ideal for Healthcare Assistants and Practice Nurses new to performing ECGs.
What will I learn?
You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the heart and cardiac conduction, (the theory behind ECGs, along with the equipment used.) How to conduct a 12 lead ECG , a systematic approach to normal rhythm interpretation and an overview of common arrythmias. You will have the opportunity to practice taking ECG recordings. The training includes both theoretical knowledge and simulated practice.
Topics Covered:
· Anatomy and physiology of the heart
· Normal cardiac conductivity
· 12- lead ECG placement and how to conduct ECG
· Identification of normal rhythm complexes
· Systematic approach to ECG interpretation
· Overview of some common ECG arrythmias
Assessment
After completing the training, you will need to undergo supervised practice in a clinical setting and complete the required competencies before receiving your certificate. You will require a competent registered (nurse) practitioner within your workplace to confirm your practical competency before you can practice independently.
Is there any funding available?
This course can be available utilising NHSE CPD funding for eligible individuals (Nurses, NAs and Allied Health Professionals) employed within general practice across Humber and North Yorkshire. If you are eligible for a CPD funded place please select the 'CPD funded' option at the checkout.
To be eligible to select the ‘CPD funded’ option, the person attending must be:
A Nurse, Nursing Associate, or Allied Health Professional (e.g. Paramedic/Physiotherapist – full AHP list detailed here)
Employed by a General Practice/ PCN within Humber and North Yorkshire
Have not claimed an individual CPD funding allowance for 2025/26 instead of accessing funded training
Have not already accessed three CPD funded courses with Academicare since September 2024

This course can also be available utilising NHSE HCA Apprenticeship Bolt-on Funding for HCAs undertaking an apprenticeship and employed within general practice across Humber and North Yorkshire. If you are eligible for this you can claim reimbursement for your place by contacting the Humber and North Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce and Training Hub (HNY PCWTH) on hnyicb.traininghub@nhs.net.
If it is later determined that you have incorrectly declared eligibility for funding, we reserve the right to contact you and issue an invoice for the full course fee.
